Statement: “Hello my Nicholas D. McCarthy and I also 31 years old and I want to be a Graphic Artist someday despite my disabilities, which are Cerebral Palsy and Hydrocephalus. The main reason I like to CosPlay is because I can be anybody I want be and it makes feel free. When I dress up as character from comic, movie, show, or book it like their whole persona takes over my body and I forget that I have disabilities because I’m so focus on portraying character right it’s like I’m in a trace or something. The second reason I CosPlay is because it has helped me grow as a person. I was used to be a very shy and kept to myself because I was scared of what think about me especially with my disabilities that I have. The neat thing about CosPlay is that there are endless possibilities what you do. It’s basically what you make of it especially when you are very creative person like I am.”
Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: I started CosPlaying a year and half ago when I moved out of my parent’s house. However while I was living there I got introduced to it by watching the TV show’s Face-off and Heroes of CosPlay.
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: My day CosPlaying at a convention was at Chase-Con which is in Saratoga Upstate NY and I dressed as Titan from the video game called Density.
Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: I would have to consider myself more of a builder when I am making costume or a prop.
Happy: Anyone who really inspires you?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: Well first off I would have to say that God would the first person that inspires me because I wouldn’t have the abilities to do any of it if it wasn’t for him. Secondly I would have to say that the cast of Face-off and the cast of Heroes of CosPlay because they have shown me that no matter what or where I am in life that I can do anything I want be despite what my disabilities are.
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: Yes, I have experienced harassment or being bullied while CosPlaying however wasn’t about me per-say I just witness it with my friend who was being bullied. I handed it by consulting my friend because she very hurt.
Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: I have learned to sew and how paint better while working on a costume or a prop. Which I never thought I would learn how to do I started to CosPlay.
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: Like I said before, I only I have only been CosPlaying for a year and half so I have never felt burned yet. I also feeling that since I am creative person so my mind always going try to think of ways to make stuff.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: The reason I love to CosPlay is because it’s the only time I feel free from the real world and because I can be whoever I want be whatever the circumstances might be.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: The thing I don’t like about CosPlaying is the feeling like you are being rush because there is always the thought that I could have done that better or done it other way because I am a perfectionist because I want portrait the character right.
Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: The reason I CosPlay is because I can be anybody I want be and it makes feel free. When I dress up as character from comic, movie, show, or book it like their whole persona takes over my body and I forget that I have disabilities because I’m so focus on portraying character right it’s like I’m in a trace or something. I like to CosPlay female characters because they are one I most relate to.
Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: Yes I have hurt myself while CosPlaying by burning my leg with a hot glue gun on accident of course.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: I would have to rate the CosPlay community at an 8.5 because most of them are very accepting despite my disabilities unlike most of my friends. So I would have to say that I have had a positive experience.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: My favorite CosPlay that I have done so far would have be The Son of The Joker because it was original character that I created because I thought that would be fun if The Joker and Harley Quinn actually had relationship where they had kid. I also dressed up and played as Abby Scioto from NCIS because I felt like I had a connection with her because I wanted to see if I had a dark side in me and I realized I did.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: I would like to CosPlay Nikki Grace is because I would like to push myself to step out of my comfort level. She is someone I admire because she isn’t afraid to show her true colors and she won’t let anyone push her around and bully her unlike myself because I basically stay in my bubble. I also created her by myself.
Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: When I won the judge’s choice award which was at my first convention ever because it invalidated that I truly belong in this world. Plus I made friendships that will last lifetime hopefully.
Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges? Were they hard to overcome? Are you still working on overcoming them?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: Yes it has challenged me because to step out of my comfort zone.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: It is to hard pick one because I like them all because I get to hang with my friends and because they also help feel like normal person for bit. I forget that I have disabilities because we all feel like we are equals.
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: The Comic Con that I would like to attend is New York Comic Con is best one on east coast and the biggest.
Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it?
Nicholas “The Squid” McCarthy: No one CosPlay’s in my family but most of my close friends do.
