Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI began cosplaying in 2014.  My cousins actually got me interested in the hobby.  For my birthday that year they bought me a ticket to Denver Comic Con, then told me that I should do a cosplay (and of course at the time I had no idea what that was) but after an explanation and a few ideas I had my first cosplay and ever since then I have been an avid cosplayer.

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysMost definitely the reception of my cosplay and the crazy amount of photos that were taken of me.  First I didn’t expect most if any people to recognize my cosplay as a gender bent Elsa let alone have people ask to take photos of and with me but boy was I not prepared for end result of immediate recognition, appreciation and photo taking of my cosplay!

Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Julio Martinez for Yensid Cosplays: I dabble in both, but I think I’ve definitely leaned a little more on the sewing side of my cosplays, but I can also make some armor and props as necessary.

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysNot exactly an individual I admire but definitely a fond respect of many cosplayers who think out of the box, and push envelopes as far as creating cosplays and making their own interpretations of well known characters.

Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysNot necessarily “bullying” per se but I would say something that was off putting was a couple of drunk individuals at a con thinking my cosplay was of someone else and just not very friendly about it.  But alas I chalk it up to them being drunk and not knowing any better, so no dirt off my shoulder in the end.  Thankfully that’s the extent of “harassment” I have received while in cosplay.

Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI honestly never thought I would learn how to sew! I had some cosplays created for me by other individuals but then slowly learned how to sew with assistance and now am quite comfortable in sewing my cosplays.  Also manipulations of craft foam into armor as well as taking materials and items and creating them into new props.

Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysMost definitely! Most recently last year with one of my cosplays I felt overwhelmed and almost defeated to the point when I almost just threw my hands up and said to heck with this cosplay I’m done with it, I don’t even care!

My advice to this who reach that point, is to walk away from the moment; take a walk, listen to some music, take a deep breath, collect yourself and reevaluate the situation and get back to it once you reach a moment of clarity.

IMG_1990.jpgHappy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysTo be totally honest, I do enjoy the attention my cosplays get and receive at cons.  But a deeper level to that is that people can appreciate the time, work, and effort I put into these cosplays.  I also enjoy seeing my thoughts and ideas come to life once my cosplays are finished and ready to share with others.

Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI dislike the preparations of the cosplays, and the deceiving thoughts that something I think to make or create would be simple easy and then when I get to it, I was totally wrong and it was WAY more difficult to bring to life.

Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?

Julio Martinez for Yensid Cosplays: I cosplay because it challenges me as a person on a creativity level, and to look back and think “wow! *I* made that, that’s *MY* creation!”.  As mentioned before I also enjoy the fact that people can appreciate my work and my cosplays and actually request photos of ME! I forever remain flattered at every con I go to when someone appreciates my work and wants to take a photo of or with me.  I think these same reasons are what keeps me coming back to cosplaying every time I do cosplay.

Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysGlue gun! I can’t even count anymore on how many times I have burnt myself with a glue gun! Also one of my cosplays was definitely a struggle with a part of the cosplay that made it difficult to move around, so that was also a time where I wasn’t exactly hurt but it wasn’t the best time physically either.

Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI find a majority of cosplayers in the community and the area where I mostly cosplay is definitely welcoming and appreciative of each other’s cosplays.  But like any other hobby there will always be a few people who find cosplay as a competitive hobby and can’t appreciate others or feel they have to be better than others.

Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?

Julio Martinez for Yensid Cosplays: I would say my Male Coronation Elsa, Male Cruella De Ville, and Male La Muerte were some of my best and biggest cosplays.

Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysMost of the cosplays I have wanted to do, I have already done but one I have thought about for quite some time now and am just trying to figure out the best way to interpret the character into a male and recognizable version would be Charlotte La Bouff from The Princess and the Frog.

Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysMost definitely my performance as Male Coronation Elsa in my first ever entry in a cosplay contest.  I won the audience award for biggest applause/reaction in the competition which was totally unexpected.  I will never forget my first competition and winning an award to top it off!

IMG_2153Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges? Were they hard to overcome? Are you still working on overcoming them?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI think my biggest challenges has been the creation of certain elements of my cosplays.  Overcoming my inability to sew was something that I can appreciate and am thankful for learning now not always having to rely on help from others to complete my creations.

Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysDenver Comic Con, since it’s the only convention I have attended.

Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysOf course it would be SDCC! That’s the convention of all conventions! I would love attending because this con has the best of the best when it comes to cosplayers and I would love to meet those cosplayers and appreciate their work!

Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysMy cousins cosplay, and actually they were the ones to get *me* involved in cosplaying.

Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying?

Julio Martinez for Yensid CosplaysI would think that my future goals with cosplaying are to continue to challenge myself with my cosplays and creations.  Improve my abilities to craft props/armor and tighten my skills as a sewer as well.  My ultimate goal is to really get my name out there as a famous cosplayer and in turn be an inspiration and help others to become better cosplayers as well.
