Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?

Summer Fire CosplayI started cosplaying in 2006 when I was in high school. I didn’t make my cosplay back then, but re-purposed thrift store finds. What got me into cosplay was the sense of community and comradely that cosplay seemed to display.

Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Summer Fire Cosplay:  I was so nervous! I was cosplaying as Suiseiseki from Rosen Maiden. I thought no one would recognize me or they may not like how I was cosplaying her. I am so happy to say I was wrong! So many people recognized who I was and complimented me and asked for photos, it was one of the best days of my life!

Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Summer Fire Cosplay: Defiantly more of a seamstress. It is only within the last year or so I have started to fabricate props and armor and experiment with lights and textures.

IMG_0388.JPGHappy: Anyone who really inspires you?

Summer Fire Cosplay: Hands down, my younger sister. She always believed in me even when I didn’t. Because she looked up to me it made me push myself to learn new techniques to try new things.

Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Summer Fire Cosplay:  I have had a few experiences where other cosplayers tell me something was not up to par or that I lacked any “real skill”, when something like that happens I typically inform them they are entitled to their opinion but I am there to have fun. I always try to meet hostilities with a positive counter measure.

Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?

Summer Fire Cosplay: Cosplay has taught me I have a lot more self-confidence than I ever thought I had. I have also learned an TON of new skills, like sewing. I am completely self-taught and if it was not for cosplay, I never would have learned this awesome skill.

Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Summer Fire CosplayCosplay can be over whelming at times, especially when learning a new skill like making armor with worbla. I have had many a midnight melt down where it feels like I will never learn this new skill or finish that new cosplay in time! Overall it does tend to work out, but not after a few tears are shed out of frustration.

Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Summer Fire Cosplay: Meeting new people and bonding over the love of a specific character you and a complete stranger are coaplaying as.

Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Summer Fire Cosplay: The misconception that you have to be a certain age/body type to cosplay certain characters.

Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?

Summer Fire Cosplay: I cosplay because it gives me a chance to fully express myself in ways that I would normally not be able to. Cosplay also allows me to learn skills and challenge myself in ways I didn’t know existed.

Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?

Summer Fire Cosplay: Every cosplay I make has bits of my DNA in it somewhere. I am clumsy and always seem to burn/cut myself on accident. The Hot glue gun seems to have a deep seeded hatred for me, and I do not know why.

Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?

Summer Fire Cosplay: All in all the community is VERY welcoming as a whole. There are a few people within the community who take things way too far or are just mean in general. Thankfully the majority of cosplayers just want to have fun and showoff their hard work, and take LOTS of photos.

Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?

Summer Fire Cosplay: My favorite cosplay is a tie between my Noflutter inspired Steampunk SnowWhite, and My mashup cosplay I call Timelord magical girl. I did make both of them.

IMG_0649.JPGHappy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?

Summer Fire Cosplay: I would LOVE to build a full functioning Dalek that I could ride around in and rig up with the Dalek voice changer.

Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?

Summer Fire Cosplay: I will never forget Billie Pipers reaction to my Timelord magical girl cosplay, she was actually impressed!

Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges? Were they hard to overcome? Are you still working on overcoming them?

Summer Fire CosplayOne challenge I have is that I am self-conscious about my body type, since I am a little on the thick side. Over the last year I have started to overcome that challenge and have started to cosplay the characters I love no matter their outfits/body type.

Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Summer Fire CosplayMegacon

Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Summer Fire Cosplay: San Diego Comic Con.

Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it?

Summer Fire Cosplay: No one in my family cosplays, although my Fiance wants to start getting into it. I have several friends who cosplay and started because they see how much fun I have had over the years.

Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying?

Summer Fire Cosplay: My goals with cosplay are to always have fun, and challenge myself with learning new skills. Other goals outside of cosplay are to just lead a happy life in general.
