Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Juan: I began cosplaying over ten years ago. I wanted to dress as a character from an anime as I saw the show and was obsessed at the time, once I did that I heard about a local convention where people dressed up and I attended. Since then I was hooked. I loved the attention and the friends I’ve made.
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Juan: What I remember first about cosplaying at conventions is the attention I received. I cosplaying InuYasha, I carried around a 6ft sword and mostly everyone was impressed with me.
Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Juan: I would say I’m more of a builder. The props are fascinating.
Happy: Is their anyone who really inspires you and why?
Juan: My friends inspire me.
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Juan: I have experienced harassment both from con folk and from “normies”. From the convention attendees it has been from my fandom or me crossplaying but it was never anything too bad. It was handled as for non convention goers it’s just the usual comments of me being immature as I like to dress in costumes and whatnot. It’s not really handled as I disregard those comments.
Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?
Juan: I’m always learning and despite being lazy and such I found I am getting more experience in cosmetics.
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Juan: I sometimes feel fatigued though as inspiration comes in and changes my mind. I would say to people that are growing tired or irritated that it is okay to take a break or call it quits. Don’t force yourself to do something if you’re unhappy.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Juan: I love that I can become a character I admire from a show or game and move away from reality for a bit.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Juan: Recently cosplay has become more of a popularity contest and the community as well has been growing more toxic I feel due to this.
Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?
Juan: I cosplay for the fun of it. I see a character I like I go for it.
Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?
Juan: Corsets and heels hurt…at first I guess I got used to it.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?
Juan: It’s accepting but a constant competition, but that’s okay.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Juan: Blair from Soul Eater, both male and female,Sailor Mars, Shikamaru from Naruto, InuYasha, Sailor Neptune, PowerLine from A Goofy Movie.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?
Juan: I have a few dream cosplays. Dart from Legend of Dragoon in full armor. Samus. Rosalina from The Mario Series. Ashitaka from Princess Mononoke. Zatanna. Just to name a few.
Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?
Juan: One of my favorite times at a convention apart from some shots I got and friends I made was one time a voice actor, I won’t mention his name had approached me for my costume. He had fans following and bothering him. He remembered me from the day before by name too and came to talk with me. The looks I was getting even though they were death stares were too funny.
Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges? Were they hard to overcome? Are you still working on overcoming them?
Juan: No real challenges right now. It helped me come to terms with my crossplaying and overall become happier too.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Juan: I would say AnimeExpo or I’d love to do an international convention.
Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it?
Juan: A couple of cousins did before with me but not anymore. Another cousin wants to. My sister wanted to in the past. Most of my close friends themselves cosplay.
Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying?
Juan: Cosplay goals…I guess to become more well known and become more recognized. As for life goals I’d love to travel more often and different places but also want to continue university and teach history.
