The Cosplayer Feature is a series of interviews done by HappyCosplayer featuring cosplayers from around the world who would like to share their story. Cosplayers are featured both here on my blog and on my Facebook pages: HappyCosplayer, JustCosplay.

Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?

Sora’s Styles: I started when I was around 12 years old, at first buying cosplays or thrifting. I saw this amazing Twilight Princess Zelda cosplayer and went “I want to do that”. And then I did a princess Zelda cosplay haha.

Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Sora’s Styles: Specifically I remember making my first convention friends. I was dressed as a cat girl, very general, nothing spectacular. But I met this group of kids that were all from Kentucky. We’ve all kept in touch since then and I’ve made more and more friends through cosplay.

Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Sora’s Styles: Tough question. I’d really like to say I’m a little bit of both. My main strengths lie in building and painting, but because of that I tend to focus on sewing to try and get better at it.

Happy: Is their anyone who really inspires you and why?

Sora’s Styles: I guess my first inspiration was Kamui cosplay; I was completely dazzled by her amour skills and how she can make cosplay into a profession. Sweets for Sweets, Nightmage, J.Hart design, and Firefly path are also some cosplayers I highly value. Since then I mostly take inspiration from my friends like Mack-Attack design and cosplay (who is my crafting buddy), Caroline Krunchy, Team Darugaru, Samantha Flynn cosplay, and many others 🙂

Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Sora’s Styles: I feel like every cosplayer experiences bullying or harassment from all sides (general people, family, other cosplayers, etc). I’ve had various insults slinged at me (too fat, too skinny, too big of boobs, not enough boob, too prude with a cosplay, too skeezy, etc) but I do what I want. Cosplay is a hobby that I am involved in that makes me happy; haters gonna hate no matter what you do, so it’s best not to worry about it.

Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?

Sora’s Styles: I’ve learned so many thing that I never thought I would need to learn. Useful things like hand embroidery, applique, using the right tool or material for the right job… But things like basic safety was something I thought I had covered. I was wrong.

Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Sora’s Styles: I don’t think that people get burned out over cosplaying itself; it seems that people get more burned out from overbooking, trying to do too many/too much, or being too involved in toxic parts of the community.

Whatever is making you feel burned out, figure out what it is and then cut that part out of the hobby. Don’t like the toxic parts of the community? Don’t associate with them anymore and focus on your own stuff. Overbooked and trying to do too much? Take it easy. Make 2 cosplays and take your time instead of doing 12. The only time I might take a break or slow down is if life gets busy; and life just happens sometimes. But creation and creativity should never stop.

Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Sora’s Styles: It’s the ultimate art form of testing yourself and your skills and infinitely learning. You can use so many different techniques in one cosplay.

Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Sora’s Styles: When something doesn’t come out correctly after trying very hard; but you gotta get knocked down sometimes.

Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?

Sora’s Styles: I want to get other people into cosplay and be that positive force in someone’s life to drive them to be creative. That and I love creating. It tickles that happy place in my brain.

Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?

Sora’s Styles: Yep. Wipe away hot glue with bare hands before it dries. Get finger caught in needle of sewing machine. Burned self with heat gun. Yep yep yep.

Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?

Sora’s Styles: It’s both welcoming, judgemental, competitive, and laid back. Communities are typically both

Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?

Sora’s Styles: Probably my Edea Kramer and Yang Xiao long. Yang is just very comfy and Edea I only wore twice, but I felt regal and epic.

Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?

Sora’s Styles: SO MANY. Probably a Dragoon cosplay is the biggest.

Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?

Sora’s Styles: Whenever I met my friend Jayden who was competing for the first time; she was so nervous so I talked her through it and held her hand. Whenever I randomly teamed up with another cinder (Karriann)cosplayer at a small con and we won best walk on. When I won the Lamp award at ohayocon for Sophitia from my senpais Zach and Jim.

Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges? Were they hard to overcome? Are you still working on overcoming them?

Sora’s Styles: All the time! Between bashing off the haters, perfecting a new technique, and fixing the dye disaster on my aurora dress; they’re all challenges. I’ll get past them somehow.

Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Sora’s Styles: Probably between Matsuricon and Youmacon. Matsuricon because so many people I know and love go there. Youmacon because it’s so giant and wonderful.

Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Sora’s Styles: Dragoncon, Katuscon, Teslacon… Because they’re giant cons of wonder and magic.

Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it?

Sora’s Styles: I’m not sure that I inspired anyone to start cosplay except for my significant other. Almost all my close friends are cosplayers, but none of my family cosplays.

Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying?

Sora’s Styles: Well, getting my degree (Chemical Engineering Bachellors) in the next couple of months along with my big girl job is the most pressing goal. Then once I get that set, I want to focus on creating more. Hopefully get out of the Novice category at big convention cosplay competitions. Probably creating a full set of armor would be rad.
