Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Kelly: I started cosplaying 2012. I have been watching anime for two years back then but never heard of cosplay. When I started to study as a vet I heard one person starts talking about anime and got my attention. She started talking about cosplay and conventions and forced me to follow her to a convention and then I got stuck with it.
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Kelly: Oh god. Probably the fear. I’ve always been afraid of people after 10 years of bullying. I was about to stand in line to get in when a bunch of girls came running fangirling because I was cosplaying Itachi from Naruto. I got so terrified but as the con vent on I was having so much fun and made so many friends. More then I’ve ever had in my life.
Happy: Do you consider yourself more of a prop maker or seamstress?
Kelly: Eh I would say both and non of it. I started with buying my costumes but then I decided to start making my own. Ciel phantomhive was my first own made cosplay and I have now started to make more cosplays on my own.
Kelly: Yes mizzpig cosplay is the one who made me follow to the con for the first time. She helped me making some small thing for my cosplay. I’ve watched her making her cosplays and got really inspired. She is an amazing cosplayer and an amazing friend. She has inspired me so many times in life and she has been standing up and protected me to many haters I’ve got over the years. She is a really kind hearted person.
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Kelly: Oh I’ve been bullied many times both over internet and conventions. It has been both cosplayers and normies. First time was at a con. I made a kimono for the character Deidara from Naturo. I’ve only had it on for 1h because I got so much mean comments like ” big people should cosplay, your to fat for this, your a shame for cosplay community” I’ve never touched that cosplay over the last 3 years. I was close on quitting but then mizzpig cosplay stood up for me.
Making me fight for what I love. I try to ignore the hate now days but at some points it’s hard to ignore and you just wanna give up. I continue because cosplay is what I love and I know I have friends and fans that loves what I’m doing and people that don’t know me tries to push me down but it won’t work.
Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?
Kelly: Cosplay have showed me that it doesn’t matter what your body looks like. What skin you have or what gender you are. You can cosplay anything. Cosplay community is like a big family if someone gets sad people gets down to earth and support each other. Honestly the only thing I saw in the world before cosplaying was darkness. But in the cosplay world there is nothing else but light. It’s about being there for everyone. Be proud and support other people. Help them if they need it.
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Kelly: I have felt it sometimes but I know that in the end it’s going to be worth it. You can get burned out by making your costumes or the stress before a con. But in the end it’s always worth it. New skills new memories. Push the limits to see how much you are capable of doing. Take a break if it’s needed but never quit unless you are sure you don’t lik cosplaying anymore.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Kelly: What I love is that you are capable of making so much by cosplaying. Even if you buy your costumes you can learn how to style a wig or makeup skills. It’s like school. You learn something new every time. I love cosplaying because I feel like home. I don’t feel that I’m not normal for playing around with makeup a lot. I feel like I found my true family by Cosplaying.
Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?
Kelly: It gives me confident. It shows me that I’m not less of a human because I’m a plus size. I feel home and welcomed on convention. I love being able to show my skills and give other cosplayer some love.
No matter if I’m shy or crazy people don’t judge me. It’s a wonderful feeling to cosplay. I’m home in it.
Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?
Kelly: Oh yeah many times. I’m the clumsy cosplayer. I don’t know how I manage sometime. I accidentally dropped the hot glue gun on my for and broke my toe. Then I’ve lost count on how many times I’ve burned myself or put the needle in my fingers xD and I always manage to hurt myself on conventions to. So yeah I’m the unlucky bird.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?
Kelly: Oh the cosplay community is very welcoming. New or old cosplayer it doesn’t matter. We help and support everyone and if a hater gets on one cosplayer then the whole community will fight back for the support of the victim. It’s never fight between cosplayer S what I know and that’s the best.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Kelly: Probably Ciel Phantomhive from Kuroshitsuji is my favorite of all times since it was my first own made costume.
Then I would say that Deidara and obits from naturopathic is a favorite as well.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?
Kelly: Oh yes. It’s Ken kaneki from Tokyo ghoul. I’m following that dream and is actually working on that cosplay right now ^^ so far only my Kagune is done but it will hopefully be done to the summer.
Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?
Kelly: It was probably when I was wearing my Ciel cosplay at one time. I was walking around with mizzpig cosplay and then so many people stoped me to take photos of me. I got really surprised every time but it was awesome.
Then on another con did I decide to compete with my Ciel in novice (beginner) and later I got a massage I have won a price and it turned out I came on first place on my first cosplay competition. It was just amazing for me.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Kelly: Oh that must be Närcon summer here in Sweden. It’s one of the biggest cons here what I know.
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Kelly: That must be a con in London. It seems so amazing and fun and I’ve always wanted to go to London one time in my life.
Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying?
Kelly: Hmm that must be to be able making so many cosplay no matter what it is then I can do it. I want to be able to help others that’s struggling figuring out how to do their cosplays. It’s like I would love support so many people and help them out. Maybe be a bit famous for it and be able to travel around to cons around the world and show people that anyone can do anything no matter what.
