The Cosplayer Feature is a series of interviews done by HappyCosplayer featuring cosplayers from around the world who would like to share their story. Two cosplayers are featured a week both here on my blog and on my Facebook pages: HappyCosplayer, JustCosplay, CosplayingCommunity

Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Maple: I’ve always loved to dress up and loving all forms of cartoons and video games, I constantly wanted to dress like the characters. It wasn’t until college though that I really got into cosplay though. I remember marathoning cosplay contest skits throughout middle and high school and being obsessed. I wanted to dress up but didn’t meet anyone who went to cons and such until college. It’s been a happy 5 years.
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Maple: I remember being really nervous and excited. I went as Link as Legend of Zelda and I had a blast. There were two other Links, which only led to a lot of puns of being LINKED together.
Happy: Is their anyone who really inspires you and why?
Maple: A lot of people inspire me. Honestly people like Commander Holly or Kelly Eden. Youtubers and cosplayers who use their platform to inspire others and help others love themselves. That is what I dream to be and do!
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Maple: The only harassment I’ve gotten was from ‘normies’. Besides catcalling, There has only been one time that truly made me want to throw up.
There was an alcohol convention, the same weekend as the con I was attending. While waiting in line for a panel, this drunk guy just walks up behind me and grabs my ass before high fiving his friend and walking away. Everyone in line saw and immediately formed a barrier around me before cussing and yelling at the guy. I was surrounded with people checking to make sure I was okay. I was really lucky.
Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying? If so what are these new skill traits?
Maple: Modeling and acting for sure! Posing is something that takes so much time and effort and even being in character takes dedication. I honestly didn’t know I’d be doing so much but I love both of these things so much now!
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Maple: There are times where I definitely feel discouraged with this hobby but then I see my friends trying so hard and enjoying it that I keep going. I find myself doing a lot buying or piecing of clothing when it comes to cosplay lately. It’s less stressful and honestly makes preparation so much easier.
I say if you are burnt out to maybe figure out if it’s the con, the costume making, or just wearing the costume in general that is stressing you out. Remember that you can totally just have one costume to wear at a con and wear it whenever you feel like it.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Maple: Meeting new people. There is no better feeling than having someone ask for a picture or talk to you about the character your cosplaying. I’ve met so many wonderful friends this way and it really makes me feel accomplished in what I do.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Maple: Besides the prep work, I would have to say the body shaming and comparison part of it. I always hate when people get compare two people as the same character to see which person did it better. Oh that person is too tall. Oh that guy is dressed as a girl. Who cares?! They are dressed as something they love and that’s great. They worked hard and in the end were all nerds in costume!
Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?
Maple: Honestly it gives me confidence. When I can be in character and make someone smile or look at pictures of me in costume, all I can think of is “When can I do it again?”
Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intentionally for cosplay?
Maple: I have a couple of cosplays that I wear 3 to 4 inch heels. Being 5’11” already I always get people asking why I go so far. I am always covered in bruises on my feet and have to take sitting breaks. The answer is simple. If it completes the look and means I can walk in confidence than I will gladly do so.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?
Maple: I think the cosplay community as a whole is pretty welcoming. There are certain individuals who are way too competitive or judge others based on their costumes, but there are people like that in every community. Whenever I see middle and high school kids who are cosplaying for the first time I am so proud to welcome them to the community.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Maple: My favorite cosplays I’ve worn would have to be my Starfire cosplay and my Articuno cosplay. Being in character for Starfire has been the best and the kids are so sweet to interact with. While in contrast, the overall response for my Articuno has made it one of my favorites. I actually cried when I got stopped by a big group of people for pictures.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do someday?
Maple: I’ve kind of done her in the past, but I for sure want to revamp her, and that’s Rapunzel from Tangled. It’s my dream to do Disney princesses and make kids smile! That sounds amazing!
Happy: What was an amazing experience you had in cosplay that you will never forget?
Maple: My number one experience would have to be a con a few years back when a girl ran up to me and asked for a picture. I didn’t think anything of it until she said “Bye Maple Syrup!” And I flipped out. I never thought I’d have someone recognize me off my page. She said I was one of her favorite cosplayers and I may have sobbed.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Maple: Right now, I would have to say OMGcon. I attend big conventions like Otakon and Ohayocon, but OMG just has such a nice atmosphere. It’s small without being boring, always has stuff to do, and everyone there is so genuine. I can’t even think of a thing to complain about there. It’s so wonderful!
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Maple: I’d have to say either Sandiego Comic Con or Anime Expo. I would love to see all the big cosplayers walking around and I can’t even imagine how cool the meet ups would be!
Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying? Maple: Oh man future goals. I would have to say meeting and helping more people. If someone can watch my videos or comment on a post and laugh, then I am so happy.
I want to be more of a listener and form more of a network of helping one another with cosplaying. It’s a hobby but it gets you to meet people and that is wonderful. Outside of that my goals are mostly to find ways to make my life a little brighter and have adventures I can be proud of!!
