The Cosplayer Feature is a series of interviews done by HappyCosplayer featuring cosplayers from around the world who would like to share their story. Two cosplayers are featured a week both here on my blog and on my Facebook pages: HappyCosplayer, JustCosplay, CosplayingCommunity
“May you be inspired by them!” -HappyCosplayer
Featured cosplayer: Z Cosplay Inc!
Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Z: I began cosplay when I went to my convention which was Anime Central 2011! I thought cosplay was just something professionals could do until I was almost everyone do it at the convention so I just dived head first!
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Z: I remember freaking out because people were asking for my photo and I didn’t know how to react. I was dressed as Poland from Hetalia and I got so many compliments on my cosplay, which I didn’t think was that great, but people loved it!
Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder?
Z: I consider myself more of a scavenger. I’m the person who sends a prayer to the cosplay gods, goes to the thrift store, and see’s what works for my cosplay. I do small scale props but nothing which could label me a builder.
Happy: Is their anyone who really inspires you and why?
Z: Honestly, my recently formed cosplay group has been the biggest cosplay inspiration I’ve had. They’re people I’ve only gotten to know in the past month and they’ve inspired me to go above and beyond in my cosplay endeavors.
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying?
Z: I have experienced bullying while in cosplay and shockingly enough it was by other cosplayers. It was at the Tokyo Ghoul meet up at Acen one year and I was cosplaying Suzuya. There were plenty of other Suzuya cosplayers there and I standing toward the front of the shoot. All of a sudden I hear “Can you one fat Suzuya go to the back?” And of course as I look around, I realized I was the ONLY bigger cosplayer at the front. My heart just sank but the people around me just kept me up front and actually made me front and center of the photos. So even though there was one rude jerk, the community came through.
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Z: I do feel overwhelmed by it sometimes. I think about all the future cosplays I wanna do and how much it’s gonna cost and all the time I have to spend on it and it makes me go a little crazy sometimes. Especially thinking about the fact that I’m still in school and I have a whole college career in front of me still. But I would never let cosplay fade out of my life. It really does keep me going most day so burnt out? Hell no!
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Z: I love the community and how supportive they can be! I’ve felt it so much recently and the community has boosted my confidence in my cosplays.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Z: Cosplay “elitist”. People who think they are the supreme authority on cosplay and feel the need to tell other people their cosplayers look wrong or “not accurate”.
Happy: Why do you cosplay? Why do you keep coming back to it?
Z: I cosplay because it provides an escape for me. Sometimes I feel too overwhelmed with life and all my responsibilities and all the things I have get accomplished. So cosplay lets me be somebody else for a short time and get away from B.S in my own life.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole?
Z: Overall, I would say the cosplay community is pretty welcoming. When you first start out there, there is that scary wall of being new to get over. But once you dive in, it’s an awesome place to be a part of. You meet people who make the whole experience so worth it, who make you laugh so hard you cry and make your cosplaying that much better.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Z: My favorite cosplays have been my Haikyuu uniforms which were all bought in Amazon.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do one day?
Z: My dream cosplay is Ruber from the movie Quest for Camelot. His armor isn’t too challenging for someone experienced in making armor but to me that’s the dream. He’s my favorite villain and I would love to do a female version of him in the future.
Happy: Has cosplaying presented you with challenges? If so what sort of challenges, and were they hard to overcome?
Z: My cosplay challenge is still dealing with self-confidence. I see all these beautiful cosplayers with their perfect makeup and handmade cosplays and I feel jealous and become judgmental toward my own cosplays. But I have to remember that I’m still growing as a cosplayer and that it takes time to improve.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Z: My favorite convention right now is Anime Midwest because I’ve built so many amazing memories at that convention over the years.
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Z: I REALLY want to attend Katsucon in the future because a lot of my favorite cosplay Youtubers attend that convention and if I got to meet one of them I would scream.
Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying? Z: My future cosplay goals is to simple just…improve. Keep getting better at the little things about cosplay and slowly build up my skill.
