Happy: When did you begin cosplaying and what got you interested in the hobby?
Pat: I got into cosplay the first month I realized what anime was back in the 6th-grade year of my junior high. Unfortunately, I did not have funds to cosplay with until the Summer of my sophomore year in high school. In which, I got a summer job. I was interested in becoming my favorite characters for a day.
Happy: What do you remember about your first day cosplaying at a convention?
Pat: I first cosplayed at a local Fan group at my Library back in middle school as Roxas during the spring of 2007. I did not have a wig but just the coat of organization 13 so I wore it proudly. What I consider my first true cosplay moment was when I bought my cloud strife cosplay and went to Chicago comicon with my uncle jj. there I got my picture taken countless times. I dyed my hair blond because I did not have the wig.
Happy: Would you consider yourself more of a seamstress or a builder? Pat: A bit of both actually. I had fully made my Jedi costume and props for the merchant as well as my Seto Kaiba. but I also buy items to help me peace some altogether. Right now I’m crafting my masterpiece.
Happy: Is their anyone who really inspires you and why?
Pat: Yes and no. My sisters Beth and Breana got me fully into anime and mentioned cosplay. so out of that I looked it up online. once they saw that i was into it they incorporated me in being quote “one of us” they laughed. It was good times.
Happy: Have you ever-experienced harassment or bullying while cosplaying? Pat: once i have saying my wig sucked. I did not form the wig and it hurt my feelings not because i wore it wrong but because my friend Stephanie formed it and they were insulting indirectly her work. I ignored there comments simply because others told me it was good and the amount of people stoping to take my pic. It does not mater How good it is cosplay should not be looked down upon.
Happy: Are there things you have learned through this hobby that you never would have guessed to have learned before you started cosplaying?
Pat: Oh my god yes. I like to go all out with cosplay. ill where makeup and pluck eyebrows even where a wig. i know it sounds like a big “du” to us in the community but most guys don’t consider what it takes. so i looked up allot of makeup tips and hair tips from online youtube as well as refreshing my home eck class to sew and craft. i find it funny that i go to both makeup and hardware stores to get that perfect cosplay.
Happy: A lot of people get overwhelmed or ‘brunt out’ over time with this hobby called cosplaying. Have you ever felt that way, or do you feel like you ever would? What would you say to those that maybe feeling burnt out now?
Pat: Yes and no. I feel burned out wearing the same thing for 3 days but sometimes all the peaces are not equipped for that day. so sometime I have to go all 3 days as the same thing and that burns me out. But when I can go as a different thing each day its fun. As far as the crafting it does take its time. My master piece project has been in the making for over 3 years now, but I pick it back up and go at it.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying that you love?
Pat: The people. I made so much friends through this its un real. I have more confidence as a cosplayer than my regular day to day because the people are open and inviting. It feels like I can be myself and relax talk to the merchants cosplayer and all the people there. I beat box with staff and reminisce with cosplayers over making there crafts. I enjoy hearing there stories and listen in wonder. It truly is an experience to be had.
Happy: What is it about cosplaying you dislike?
Pat: The main stream basics. What I mean by that is because its getting more and more popular more and more jerks come into the community who have no respect for the panels con goers and con guests. Tho I will say is not often but its there.
Happy: Have you ever hurt yourself accidentally or intently for the sake of cosplay?
Pat: My resident evil 4 Merchant cosplay. I almost blacked out in that. It was hot and heavy with to many layers for one cosplay. I pieced it together by items around my house, and when I took it off steam evaporated off my arms. It was not fun. I only wore it once. I do plan on making it less layered next time for sure.
Happy: Over all how would you rate the cosplay community as a whole? Pat: I rate the community a solid 10 out of 10. Never will I find a more happy and inviting group of people than at a convention. The judgmental ones are not at cons for me but are jerks online. The best and worst looking cosplays i have fun with because thats what it is bottom line for fun and enjoyment.
Happy: What are some of your favorite cosplays you have worn?
Pat: Cloud strife and Anakin/Jedi cosplay. I made my Jedi and bought my cloud strife. I based my Jedi colors off of Anikin Skywalkers Jedi robes but I made mine different to those who are not in the fandom I’m Anikin and thats fine but to those who are I’m a Jedi. I’m cool with either or. I love them both because I get allot of pictures and they were my first two real cosplays.
Happy: Do you have a dream cosplay you would love to do one day? Pat: My master piece and one other. Seto kaiba. Yugioh was my favorite anime as a kid. Tho I’m making Seto kaiba because I want it to be perfect 100%. And as for my master piece its hard making robots lets just keep it at that.
Happy: What was an amazing experience either in cosplay or at a convention that you will never forget?
Pat: I had my dream come true in terms of cosplay. I use to do some contact sword spinning and so as the Jedi at the Ramencon rave I did my tricks in the middle of a dance circle as people jumped around chanting “Go Jedi !Go Jedi!” I made sure to perform my best for them. My skills are now rusty as I had not had time to practice.
Happy: What is your favorite convention right now to attend?
Pat: Anime midwest was a great con to go to. It had so much activities and panels and arcades. But my all time favorite is Ramencon. I loved the people and events there. Especially Cosplay Foam Fighting and the rave!
Happy: What is a convention you would REALLY like to attend one day and why?
Pat: I want to go to Acen because I hear its huge. And I thought Anime Midwest was big.
Happy: Does any one in your family cosplay? How about close friends? Did you get anyone to cosplay because you were doing it? Pat: Both my sisters cosplay and do it way better than I could, and allot of my friends do too. Some of my friends who don’t cosplay have heard my stories and now want to try so I hope to bring them next time.
Happy: What are your future goals with cosplaying? How about future goals for yourself personally outside of cosplay if different? Pat: My future goals is to do a group cosplay from Final Fantasy. As for myself I want to own an otaku/hobby shop with a small cosplay cafe attached to it. I know its a big dream but I’ll get there.
